How much steel a house needs
A residential RCC building typically needs between 3.5 and 4.5 kg of TMT steel for every square foot of built-up area. A house with 1,200 sq ft of built-up area therefore needs roughly 4.2 to 5.4 tonnes. This is an estimate for budgeting. The exact figure comes from your structural drawing.
Estimated steel by built-up area
| Built-up area | Estimated TMT steel |
|---|---|
| 600 sq ft | 2.1 to 2.7 tonnes |
| 1,000 sq ft | 3.5 to 4.5 tonnes |
| 1,200 sq ft | 4.2 to 5.4 tonnes |
| 1,500 sq ft | 5.3 to 6.8 tonnes |
| 2,400 sq ft | 8.4 to 10.8 tonnes |
Built-up area is the total of all floors, not the plot size. A 1,200 sq ft plot with two full floors has more built-up area than 1,200 sq ft.
What moves the figure up or down
- Number of floors.
- Soil condition and foundation type.
- Column spacing and slab spans.
- The grade of TMT in the design.
How to get the exact quantity
Your structural engineer's bar bending schedule lists every bar by diameter, length and number. Add up the weight for each diameter using a TMT bar weight chart and you have the order quantity.
Binding wire for the same job
You also need binding wire to tie the bars. Add it to the same requirement.
Send us your schedule
Send your bar bending schedule or drawing on WhatsApp and we quote for the full list. We supply every order size, from a mistri's small job to a builder's full project.

What is a bar bending schedule?
A bar bending schedule is the structural engineer's list of every reinforcement bar in the building by diameter, length, shape and number. It gives the exact steel quantity to order.
