Price of Steel per Kg in Bangalore: What a Dealer's TMT Quote Includes, from GST to Site Delivery

TL;DR: The price of steel per kg in Bangalore ran from ₹63 to ₹84 for retail TMT bars in October 2026, according to Tata nexarc's Bangalore price list[1] updated 7 October 2026. That band does not say whether GST, loading or delivery is included, and dealer quotes differ on exactly those points. Brand choice moves the per-kg rate more than bar diameter does, although some price lists add a small premium for 8mm bars. The number worth comparing is the landed rate per kg once the steel is unloaded at your site, not the headline figure.

TMT prices in Bangalore sit in two bands, trade and retail

The price of steel per kg for TMT bars in Bangalore depends on which counter quotes it and on what basis. Tata nexarc, a Tata-group marketplace that sells steel, puts multi-brand retail TMT at ₹63 to ₹84 per kg in its October 2026 update, with a lower trade band of ₹54,000 to ₹61,000 per tonne for bulk buyers. Its page does not state whether either band includes GST.

Other published figures sit lower because they measure different things. DealOnSteel, an Indian steel dealer's site, gave a TMT range of ₹52 to ₹58 per kg in April 2026[2] for India as a whole, without saying whether tax or delivery was included. That figure is six months older, national rather than city-level, and unsplit by brand or size. No neutral government series publishes a delivered Bangalore TMT rate, so every current figure comes from a seller's own price page.

Bangalore dealers say as much themselves. Kaushalesh Steels marks its October 2026 rates as approximate and subject to brand availability, quantity, GST and transportation charges[3]. Large cost databases carry the same caution: Gordian's RSMeans describes its steel figures as national averages that local costs may not match.

Landed rate
the price per kg of TMT steel once GST, transport, loading and unloading are added and the bars are on your site.

The landed rate is the only figure that compares two dealers fairly. Amrit Steels, a City Market wholesale dealer whose family business has traded steel since 1972, publishes no fixed price because rates move with the market. Send your bar list and site location, and the day's rate comes back for steel delivered to your site.

Is the per-kg rate a dealer quotes inclusive of GST and delivery?

Not always, and a quote rarely says so unless you ask. Agni Steels, a TMT manufacturer, answers the question "does steel price include GST?" with "not necessarily"[4], noting that some quotations show the base price separately from GST and transportation. Delivery follows the same pattern: a per-kg figure sent on WhatsApp can be ex-yard (collected from the warehouse) or delivered.

ARS Steel offers one clear example of a split basis. Its posted rates include GST but exclude freight, transportation, loading and unloading[5], as of its 15 October 2026 update. Those are Tamil Nadu rates and one competing manufacturer's policy, not a Bangalore rule, yet they show how two rates that look alike can rest on different bases.

The table below sets out the four bases a Bangalore buyer is likely to meet.

Quote basisGSTTransport to siteLoading and unloadingWhat to ask
Base rate, ex-yardAdded on topExtra, or collect yourselfExtraAsk for GST, freight and handling as separate lines
GST-inclusive, ex-yardIncludedExtraExtraAsk what freight to your pin code costs
Base rate, deliveredAdded on topIncludedAskConfirm who unloads at site
Landed rateIncludedIncludedIncludedConfirm validity period and weight basis

GST deserves its own line on every quotation. Ask the dealer to print the GST rate and amount separately, so the base rate per kg stays visible.

Amrit Steels quotes project supplies on a delivered basis: loading, unloading and delivery are not charged, so the rate you receive is the rate for steel on your site. Send the list and ask for that delivered rate in writing.

Brand moves the per-kg rate more than bar diameter does

On a single Bangalore price list, the gap between brands dwarfs the gap between sizes. Tata nexarc's October 2026 list[6] shows Tata Tiscon at ₹79 to ₹83 per kg across 8mm to 20mm, while Jindal Panther sits at ₹65 to ₹70 for 8mm and ₹65 to ₹69 for 10mm to 20mm. Between those two brands the difference is roughly ₹14 per kg; between two Jindal Panther sizes it is ₹1 at the top of the band.

The production route explains much of the brand spread. Primary TMT comes from integrated steel plants that start from iron ore, and secondary TMT from induction furnace units and rolling mills that use scrap or sponge iron. Amrit Steels stocks JSW Neosteel, SAIL and Vizag as primary brands in Fe 550D, and Kamdhenu, India Gold and President as secondary brands in Fe 550. An ISI-marked secondary bar must still pass the same IS 1786 tests as a primary bar of the same grade.

Dealers themselves warn that a cheaper per-kg quote may come from a local brand whose quality varies[7]. For that reason, a brand comparison only holds when the grade matches. A lower rate is not a saving if one quote is Fe 550D and the other Fe 550, so take the grade from your engineer's drawing and compare brands within it.

Amrit Steels can price two or three of its six brands against the same list at the same grade, which isolates the brand as the only variable. Send the list with the grade marked.

Why does 8mm TMT sometimes cost more per kg than 16mm?

Some price lists charge more per kg for 8mm bars and some do not, and no published source explains the difference. The baseline is that TMT steel is commonly traded by weight[8], so one per-kg rate can value any diameter. Agni Steels adds that diameter does not automatically give a bar a different base price per kg; what changes sharply with diameter is the weight per metre.

Real quotes often show a small premium on thin bars all the same. On its Tamil Nadu list, ARS Steel adds ₹1.50 per kg for 8mm and 32mm over its 10mm to 25mm sizes[9], calling it an "adjustment" and giving no reason. Tata Tiscon on the Tata nexarc Bangalore list shows no size gap at all. The accurate answer is "often, but not always, and it depends on the brand."

One explanation circulates in online forums: mills roll thin diameters more slowly per hour, so each kg costs more to make. That is a plausible reason rather than an established fact, and no mill data in the public record confirms it.

The premium is simple to price. A 12 m length of 8mm bar weighs about 4.74 kg[10], so 200 bars come to 948 kg, and a ₹1.50 premium on that weight adds ₹1,422. That is real money, but small beside a brand gap of ₹10 or more per kg.

If a quote carries different rates for 8mm and 16mm, ask the dealer to explain the gap. Give Amrit Steels the quantity for each diameter and the day's rate comes back against every size, delivered to site.

A worked quote shows where two per-kg rates for one brand split apart

Two dealers can quote the same brand at the same per-kg rate and still land at different totals. Agni Steels lists why: manufacturer, grade, quantity, location, freight, dealer margin, taxes and commercial terms[11] can all differ between two suppliers of the same 12mm bar. The example below holds brand and rate constant and changes only the basis.

Every TMT quote is weight multiplied by rate, so weight comes first. Theoretical weight per metre follows the formula D²/162, where D is the diameter in mm. The list below uses hypothetical quantities for a small residential frame.

DiameterBars (12 m)Weight per barTotal weight
8mm2004.74 kg948 kg
12mm12010.67 kg1,280.4 kg
16mm6018.96 kg1,137.6 kg
Total3803,366 kg

Bar weights follow the Agni Steels table cited above; for 12mm, manufacturers differ slightly at about 0.89 kg per metre. Now take one rate, call it R per kg, from two dealers:

  1. Dealer A quotes R per kg, GST extra, ex-yard. The bill is 3,366 kg × R, plus GST on that amount, plus freight to your site, plus loading and unloading. None of those last three lines shows in the headline rate.

  2. Dealer B quotes R per kg, GST included, delivered and unloaded. The bill is 3,366 kg × R and nothing more. Its per-kg figure matches Dealer A's, but Dealer B has quoted a landed rate.

On this list, every ₹1 per kg is worth ₹3,366. A dealer who undercuts by ₹1 per kg and then adds a ₹5,000 freight line has quoted the dearer steel.

Bundles add one more conversion. Radha TMT gives an 8mm bundle as 10 rods at about 47.4 kg[12] and a 16mm bundle as 3 rods at about 56.9 kg, so a per-bundle price has to become a per-kg price before you compare it.

For freight and handling, a project supply from Amrit Steels looks like Dealer B: loading, unloading and delivery are not charged. Send your bar bending schedule, ask for the GST basis on the quote, and compare totals rather than headlines.

Which hidden charges should you check before accepting a TMT quotation?

Most surprises in a TMT bill come from lines the per-kg rate never mentioned. Industry buying guides advise confirming whether a quote is per kg or per tonne, inclusive or exclusive of GST and transport, and for the same grade, diameter and delivery location[13] before setting it beside another. Work through these points with every quote in hand.

  • Unit and basis. Confirm whether the figure is per kg, per tonne or per bundle, and whether it is ex-yard or delivered. Convert all of them to per kg before comparing.

  • Freight, loading and unloading. Ask what transport to your pin code costs and who unloads at site. Unloading bars in a narrow Bangalore lane takes labour, and someone bills for it unless the quote says otherwise.

  • Cutting and bending. Ask whether cutting to length or bending is included, and at what charge. No published source gives a standard Bangalore rate for this work, so get the figure in writing.

  • Weight basis. Ask whether billing uses theoretical weight or weighbridge weight. Amrit Steels' published weight chart lists a batch tolerance of ±7% for 8mm and 10mm bars under IS 1786, so the two can differ.

  • Validity and test certificates. Manufacturers say a website reference rate does not reserve a future price[14]; only a quotation with a stated validity period does. Ask too for the test certificate matching brand, grade and diameter.

Timing matters as much as the line items. Steel market analysts at MetalMiner warn that prices can move faster than budgets are revised[15], so a rate taken three weeks before ordering may no longer hold.

Amrit Steels weighs every load on in-house machines, and customers can recheck it on a public weighing scale, so the quantity ordered is the quantity that reaches site. Send your list on WhatsApp at +91 97315 56421 and ask for the rate delivered to your site.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the steel price per kg in Bangalore inclusive of GST?
Bangalore TMT rates are not always inclusive of GST. Some quotes show the base price with GST added as a separate line, while some manufacturers publish GST-inclusive rates. Ask the dealer to state the GST rate and amount on the quotation, and confirm whether the per-kg figure sits before or after tax.
Does a TMT dealer in Bangalore charge for delivery?
Many TMT quotes in Bangalore exclude freight, loading and unloading, which then appear as separate charges on the bill. Amrit Steels does not charge loading, unloading or delivery on project supplies, so its quoted rate is the rate for steel on site. Always ask whether a quote is ex-yard or delivered.
Why is an 8mm TMT bar more expensive per kg than 16mm?
An 8mm TMT bar is not always more expensive per kg than a 16mm bar. Some price lists add a small premium for 8mm, while others charge one rate from 8mm to 20mm. No published source explains the premium, so ask the dealer to justify any size difference on the quotation.
How much does one 12 m TMT rod weigh?
A 12 m TMT rod weighs about 4.74 kg in 8mm, about 10.67 kg in 12mm and about 18.96 kg in 16mm, based on the D²/162 formula. Multiply the rod weight by the per-kg rate to get the cost of one TMT rod before GST, freight and handling.
How do I compare two TMT quotations for my house?
Compare two TMT quotations on the landed rate: the per-kg cost after GST, freight, loading and unloading. Check that both quotations use the same unit, grade, bar diameters and delivery location. A lower headline rate with separate freight and handling lines can cost more in total than a delivered rate.
Is a cheaper TMT brand as good as a primary brand?
A cheaper TMT brand is comparable to a primary brand only when both carry the ISI mark and the same grade, such as Fe 550D. ISI-marked secondary TMT bars must pass the same IS 1786 tests as primary bars of that grade. Follow the grade on the engineer's drawing when choosing.
How long is a steel dealer's per kg quote valid?
A steel dealer's per-kg quote holds only for the validity period written on it. Website rates are reference figures and do not lock a price, and steel prices can move within days. Amrit Steels quotes the day's rate for this reason, so confirm the validity before placing the order.
