Iron Rod, Saria, Loha and TMT: What Bangalore Buyers Actually Mean When They Ask for an Iron Rod

TL;DR: An iron rod bought for a house in Bangalore is, in almost every order, a steel TMT bar: the reinforcement bar that Indian mills sell under the TMT name. Saria, sariya, loha, Tor steel and plain "rod" are everyday names for that same product, and an undated Quora answer from Surya Prakash Goud, who studied metallurgy[1], states that a TMT rod and a TMT bar are the same thing. Calling the bar "iron" is technically loose, because it is a low-carbon steel, but the word does no harm at the counter. For a slab, ask for TMT bars by grade and by diameter in millimetres, and take both from your structural engineer's drawing.

Iron rod is everyday shorthand for a steel TMT bar

"Iron rod" is the name most buyers use for concrete reinforcement, and in a house-building order it nearly always means a TMT bar. A TMT (thermo-mechanically treated) bar is a steel reinforcement bar that is sprayed with water as it leaves the rolling mill and then tempers itself, which gives it a hard outer layer and a softer, more ductile core. Indian steelmakers sell exactly this product under that name: SAIL markets its building bars as TMT bars branded SAIL SeQR[2], through a two-tier distributor and dealer network.

The "iron" in the name is habit, not description. A January 2025 explainer from JSW One MSME[3] describes TMT bars as a steel alloy with carbon content typically below 0.30%. The old word also survives on the bar itself, because every grade stamped on a TMT bar begins with Fe, the chemical symbol for iron.

When does "iron rod" mean something else?

Occasionally a seller uses "iron rod" for plain mild steel (MS) bar that has had no TMT treatment. Quantum Steel Nigeria, a TMT manufacturer, draws exactly that line in an undated sales page[4] that sets "traditional iron rods" of mild steel against TMT. That is a marketing distinction written for the Nigerian market, not a standard definition. The safe habit in Bangalore is simple: whatever word you use, confirm the grade marking before the bars are loaded.

Which names for iron rod types will a Bangalore steel shop recognise?

Most of the names in Indian steel buying point to the same reinforcement bar, and the few that do not are worth knowing so you never receive the wrong one. Hindi-speaking buyers search for TMT prices with "saria" and "loha", as the keyword list under a March 2026 BuildMakaan video on sariya rates[5] shows, with sizes written both as "sut" and in millimetres. That list never says how a sut converts to millimetres, and no source we reviewed does either, so give every size in mm.

Kannada usage is the gap in the public record. No published source we found documents the Kannada words Bangalore buyers use for reinforcement bar, so this glossary does not offer a translation it cannot stand behind. At Amrit Steels, the English trade name plus numbers settles any doubt: "TMT, Fe 550D, 10 mm and 12 mm" is an order nobody can misread.

How does a TMT bar differ from a plain mild steel rod?

The difference is the process, not the carbon content. JSW One MSME's comparison of TMT and MS bars[6] describes TMT as hot rolled, quenched and tempered, while MS bars go through melting, casting and rolling without the thermo-mechanical step. Its carbon figures are close together: typically below 0.30% for TMT and usually below 0.25% for MS. In the TMT process the water spray cools the surface fast while the core cools slowly, which is where the hard skin and the ductile centre come from.

Typical use in a houseFoundations, columns, beams and other load-bearing RCCGates, grills, supports and minor non-structural work
ShapesRound reinforcement barRound, square and flat

MS bar is a legitimate product with its own jobs. JSW One MSME says round MS bars serve general construction and machine parts, square bars go into gates and grills, and flat bars work as supports and base plates. That range is exactly why "iron rod" needs a qualifier at a shop that stocks both: say "TMT for the slab", and nobody loads MS rounds by mistake.

What should you ask for at a steel shop when the rods are for a slab?

Ask for TMT bars by grade and diameter, in the quantities listed on your engineer's bar bending schedule. A bar bending schedule is the structural engineer's list of every bar in a member, with its diameter, length, shape and count. With that sheet in hand, the order takes five steps.

  1. Start from the drawing, not a rule of thumb. Slab steel is set by the structural engineer for that slab's span, load and thickness. Slab guides that circulate online are often American, written in inches and US bar numbers, which is not how Indian TMT is sold. If you have no drawing yet, get one before you buy.

  2. Name the grade. TMT bars carry grades such as Fe 415, Fe 500, Fe 500D, Fe 550 and Fe 600, where the number refers to yield strength, as another answer in the same Quora thread[7] sets out. A "D" suffix marks a ductile variant with higher minimum elongation, according to the grade table Amrit Steels publishes. Match the grade on the drawing exactly.

  3. Give diameters in millimetres, with a quantity for each. Sellers expect this: a Justdial listing for TMT wholesalers in Tiptur, Tumkur district[8] asks buyers to specify the diameter and offers 12 mm, 16 mm and 20 mm. Amrit Steels supplies 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 and 32 mm bars in 12 metre lengths, so every size on a residential schedule comes from one counter.

  4. Ask for the ISI mark and the test report. Mills promote TMT on strength, ductility, weldability and bond strength, and SAIL uses all four phrases for SAIL SeQR[9]. Treat those words as a list of things to check on the mill test certificate, and confirm that its brand, grade and diameter match the bars delivered.

  5. Refuse a swap to plain MS bar. JSW One MSME lists foundations, columns, beams and other load-bearing elements as the usual home of TMT in houses. The same blog says MS bars can suit "smaller slabs" and other non-critical work without defining small, so read that as one supplier's view and follow the grade your engineer specified.

An iron rod size chart is really a weight chart by diameter

TMT is sold by weight, so the useful size chart converts each diameter into kilograms. Amrit Steels publishes the chart below, worked from the standard formula weight (kg/m) = D² ÷ 162, with D in millimetres.

Diameterkg per metrekg per 12 m barBars per tonne (approx.)Batch tolerance
8 mm0.3954.74211±7%
10 mm0.6177.40135±7%
12 mm0.88810.6694±5%
16 mm1.5818.9653±5%
20 mm2.4729.6434±3%
25 mm3.8546.2022±3%
32 mm6.3175.7213±3%

The chart also answers the common question about 12 mm iron rods. By Amrit Steels' figures, a 12 metre length of 12 mm bar weighs about 10.66 kg, so its cost is that weight multiplied by the day's per-kg rate. For a rough whole-house total, Amrit Steels works on 3.5 to 4.5 kg of TMT per square foot of built-up area across all floors, with the exact figure coming from the bar bending schedule.

Why does no Bangalore dealer publish a fixed iron rod rate?

TMT prices move with the mill market, so a fixed list would be wrong within days. Amrit Steels quotes the day's rate on request and publishes no standing price. No published source gives a dated, verifiable TMT price for Bangalore, and a rate quoted for Mumbai or a North Indian market is not a Bangalore rate.

India consumed 41.57 million tonnes of finished steel in April to June 2026, 8.3% more than a year earlier, according to .
Source: provisional Joint Plant Committee data published by the Ministry of Steel

Those figures cover all finished steel, not TMT alone, and carry no state breakdown. SAIL's dealer-network page[10] adds that India's National Steel Policy aims to raise per capita steel use to 158 kg by 2030, which is a policy target rather than a measured figure. Karnataka sits close to the supply: Reuters, citing CRU analyst Lalit Ladkat, named JSW Steel's Karnataka mills[11] among the drivers of India's iron ore imports in 2025-26.

Amrit Steels takes the order however it is phrased

Amrit Steels has supplied reinforcement from City Market since 1972, when the family firm traded as Lal Trading Corporation and the product was called Tor steel. Partners Rajiv Shankarlal and Amit Shankarlal carried the same business forward as Amrit Steels in 2019. The owners' rule is that any approach is welcome: ask for iron rod, saria, loha, Tor or TMT, and the order is written up as TMT bars by brand, grade and diameter.

  • What Amrit Steels supplies. TMT bars from six brands: JSW, SAIL and Vizag in Fe 550D, and Kamdhenu, India Gold and President in Fe 550. Every bar is ISI-marked and comes with a test report, and Amrit Steels supplies no non-ISI material at any order size.

  • What to send for a quote. Send the brand if your engineer specified one, the diameters, the quantity per diameter and the site location. For a whole house, the bar bending schedule or structural drawing is enough to price the job at the day's rate.

  • How the steel arrives. Small quantities leave the City Market warehouse, and larger lots go direct from the mill to site. Orders placed within working hours go out the same day, otherwise the next day, with free loading, unloading and delivery on project supplies.

  • Who can order. Builders, contractors, homeowners and mistris all buy from the same counter, with no minimum quantity. Amrit Steels is supplying at least 100 projects at any given time, big and small.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is an iron rod the same as a TMT bar?
In house construction, an iron rod is almost always a TMT bar under an everyday name. TMT bars are low-carbon steel, so "iron" is loose, but the product is the same. Occasionally a seller means plain mild steel bar by "iron rod", so check the grade stamped on the bar, such as Fe 550D, before it is loaded.
What is saria called in Kannada and English at a Bangalore steel shop?
In English, saria is a TMT bar, the name Indian mills such as SAIL use for reinforcement bars. No published source documents the Kannada word Bangalore buyers use for saria, so this glossary does not guess one. At Amrit Steels, asking for "TMT" with a grade and a diameter in millimetres settles the order in any language.
What should I ask for at a steel shop if I need rods for a slab?
For a slab, ask for TMT bars in the grade your structural engineer specified, such as Fe 550D, with each diameter in millimetres and the quantity per diameter from the bar bending schedule. Ask the steel shop for the ISI mark and the mill test report, and refuse plain mild steel bar unless the drawing calls for it.
Can I use mild steel rods for a house roof slab?
Mild steel rods should not replace TMT bars in a house roof slab unless your engineer specifies them. JSW One MSME lists load-bearing parts of a house as TMT work, though the same blog says mild steel can suit undefined "smaller slabs". Treat that as one supplier's view and follow the grade on your structural drawing.
What does Fe 550D mean on a TMT bar?
Fe 550D on a TMT bar marks a grade with a minimum yield strength of 550 N/mm², and the "D" stands for higher ductility. The prefix Fe is the chemical symbol for iron. The IS 1786 table Amrit Steels publishes gives Fe 550D a minimum elongation of 14.5%, against 10% for plain Fe 550, plus a lower carbon limit.
How much does a 12 mm iron rod weigh?
A 12 mm iron rod, meaning a 12 mm TMT bar, weighs about 0.888 kg per metre, or about 10.66 kg for a standard 12 metre length, according to the weight chart Amrit Steels publishes. Roughly 94 such bars make a tonne. Multiply the bar's weight by the day's per-kg rate to price one 12 mm rod.
